Lumbar Core Stabilization

Core stability refers to the activation of the muscles that stabilize the lower back, including the multifidi, transverse abdominals and pelvic floor. These core muscles are key stabilizers of both the lumbar spine and the pelvis. Muscles are inhibited when pain signals are present in an area; the low back is no exception. Back injuries or misuse create inhibition to the core muscles, in which the multifidi and abdominals atrophy (lose size and strength). Proper treatment of the low back will test for core stability and ensure that proper support and stability is there during the rehabilitation process.
